Austria is a landlocked country in Central Europe characterized by the alpine landscapes of the Eastern Alps, scenic valleys, rolling foothills, and the Danube River flowing through its northern regions.

๐Ÿ“ Austria is a landlocked country located in Central Europe, positioned within the eastern Alps and serving as a bridge between Western and Eastern Europe. It is bordered by Germany and Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia and Hungary to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west.
Austriaโ€™s terrain is dominated by the Alps, which cover much of the western and southern parts of the country, while the eastern regions feature lower hills and plains along the Danube River basin. This varied landscape has influenced settlement patterns, transportation routes, and economic activities. Austriaโ€™s central location has historically made it a crossroads of European cultures, trade, and political influence, connecting major regions across the continent.

What is an ISO Country Code?

ISO country codes come from the international standard ISO 3166 created by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). These codes are used globally in databases, aviation systems, banking, shipping, and international data systems to uniquely identify countries and territories.

ISO 3166-1 codes are the two-letter country codes such as US, FR, or JP. These are called Level-1 ISO codes.

Only ISO 3166-1 codes support flag emojis. Flag emojis are created by combining two Unicode regional indicator letters that match the country's ISO two-letter code.

ISO 3166-2 codes represent states, provinces, or regions. Example: US-AZ = Arizona CA-ON = Ontario Subdivision codes do not have flag emojis.

Historical, Iconic Motto:

"A.E.I.O.U."

Acronym: "Austriae est imperare orbi universo"

Acronym: "Alles Erdreich ist ร–sterreich untertan"

(Translated from Latin and German: "All the world is subject to Austria")
Key Aspects of the A.E.I.O.U. Motto: Historical, iconic motto of the House of Habsburg:

The motto A.E.I.O.U. was coined by Emperor Frederick III. Its most common interpretation is Austriae est imperare orbi universo (Latin) or Alles Erdreich ist ร–sterreich untertan (German), meaning โ€œAll the world is subject to Austria.โ€

Origin:
The five vowels were used by Emperor Frederick III (1415โ€“1493) to sign buildings, tableware, and official documents.

Interpretations:
While โ€œAll the world is subject to Austriaโ€ is the most famous, there are over 300 interpretations, including Austria est imperio optime unita (โ€œAustria is the empire best unitedโ€).

Usage:
The motto is still found today in the Federal Chancellery of Austria and is the official motto of the Theresian Military Academy.

Modern Context:
Austria has no modern official motto, though a 1951 proposal suggested:
Austria Europae Imago, Onus, Unio
(โ€œAustria: Image, Burden, Union of Europeโ€)

Modern Suggestion (1951) Motto:

"Austria Europae Imago, Onus, Unio"

(Translated from Latin: "Austria: Image, Burden, Union of Europe")

Tourism Slogan:

โ€žAnkommen und neue Energie tankenโ€œ.

(Translated from German: "Arrive and Revive")
